Rams announce 2009 schedule; switch
to Friday home games
REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina Rams released their 2009
schedule on Tuesday, announcing that the team will play all four of
its Canada West regular season home games on Friday nights at
Mosaic Stadium.
“We’re excited about moving to Friday night games,” said head coach
Frank McCrystal, who guided the Rams to a 5-3 record last year and
a third-place finish in the conference. “The move was dictated by
both travel and by the CFL’s schedule, and we are certainly hoping
that moving to Friday nights will also provide a greater
opportunity for university students to get out and support our
team.”
For the fourth consecutive season and the sixth time since the Rams
ascended to the CIS level in 1999, Regina will begin its season
with a game against the University of Manitoba. The Rams and the
Bisons will kick off the campaign on Friday, Sept. 4 at Mosaic
Stadium.
The schedule features two games against provincial rival
Saskatchewan. The Rams and the Huskies will play on Friday, Sept.
11 at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon and will renew acquaintances
in the final week of the regular season, with the two teams
scheduled to meet on Friday, Oct. 30 at Mosaic Stadium.
The Rams also have two conference games scheduled against the
Calgary Dinos, who ended Regina’s season last year with a win over
the Rams in the Canada West semifinals. The Rams will host the
Dinos on Friday, Sept. 18 at Mosaic Stadium with the return game
scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 in Calgary.
Regina will also play host to Simon Fraser for the second season in
a row. The Clan, who qualified for the playoffs last season and
proceeded to upend Saskatchewan in the semifinals before bowing out
to Calgary in the Hardy Cup, will play the Rams at Mosaic Stadium
on Friday, Oct. 9.
The Canada West semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 7, with the Hardy
Cup slated for the following week. The conference champion will
square off with the Atlantic University Sport champion in the Uteck
Bowl on Nov. 21, with the winner advancing to the Vanier Cup on
Nov. 28 in Laval, Que.
