Scarcelli named Canada West Special Teams Player of the Week

For the second time in the last three weeks, University of Regina fifth-year kicker Perri Scarcelli has been named the Canada West Special Teams Player of the Week.

Scarcelli earned the weekly honour after kicking a last-minute 36-yard field goal into a frigid wind to give the Rams a 26-24 victory over Simon Fraser on Friday night. He was also successful on two other field goal attempts during the win, hitting from 25 and 16 yards out.

With a single in the second quarter and two successful point-after attempts as well, Scarcelli scored 12 of Regina's 26 points on Friday.

Scarcelli’s game-winning field goal was his 15th of the season, breaking his own school single-season record of 14, which he set during the 2008 campaign. The Canada West single-season record is held by Jamie Boreham, who hit 23 for Manitoba in 2001. He also moved up to third place in Canada West history with 277 career points scored and now ranks fifth on the conference list with 51 field goals made.

The award is the third of Scarcelli’s career, as he was also named the Canada West Special Teams Player of the Week two weeks ago and Sept. 11, 2005.

The Rams (3-2) will square off with Alberta (2-3) in Edmonton on Saturday. A win for Regina would clinch a playoff berth for the Rams.
