Scarcelli named CIS Special Teams
Player of the Week
Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday that the
University of Regina’s Perri Scarcelli has been named its
Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his
career.
Scarcelli, a fifth-year kicker, kicked a 36-yard field goal into
the wind in the last minute of Friday’s 26-24 win over Simon
Fraser and also hit two other field goals during the game. With
a single in the second quarter and two successful point-after
attempts as well, Scarcelli scored 12 of Regina's 26 points in
the win.
“Perri’s kick was obviously huge for us,” Rams head coach Frank
McCrystal said. “He’s been great all season long, too. Perri
brings leadership and confidence to the team and really has
allowed us to maintain great field position all year.”
Scarcelli’s game-winning field goal was his 15th of the season,
breaking his own school single-season record of 14, which he set
last year. With three Canada West games still remaining for the
Rams, Scarcelli has a chance to threaten the conference
single-season record of 23 field goals, set by Manitoba’s Jamie
Boreham during the 2001season.
Scarcelli also moved up to third place on the Canada West
all-time list with 277 career points scored. He ranks fifth on
the conference list with 51 career field goals.
Mount Allison kick returner Gary Ross and Ottawa kicker Matt
Falvo were also up for the weekly honour. Scarcelli becomes the
first Ram to be named the CIS Special Teams Player of the Week
since he won the award on Sept. 14, 2005.
The Rams (3-2) will be back in action against Alberta (2-3) in
Edmonton on Saturday. A win for Regina would clinch a playoff
berth for the Rams.
