Rams host No. 4 Calgary on Friday night
The University of Regina Rams will host the No. 4-ranked Calgary
Dinos on Friday night at Mosaic Stadium in a Canada West game
featuring two 1-1 teams.
The Rams are coming off of a 10-9 loss to No. 3-ranked
Saskatchewan, a game which stands as the lowest-scoring contest
in U of R history. Neither team scored a touchdown until the
13-minute mark of the fourth quarter, when the Huskies drove
downfield to score the game-winning touchdown. The Rams had a
chance to tie the game, but a 45-yard field goal attempt by
Perri Scarcelli was pulled wide left.
Quarterback Marc Mueller had another solid game for the Rams,
completing 23 of 40 passes for 296 yards. Mark McConkey was his
top receiver, hauling in seven passes for 72 yards. On defence,
cornerback Jeff Lukomski led the team with six solo tackles and
two assisted tackles.
After losing an overtime game to Saskatchewan to start the
Canada West season, Calgary recovered with a 34-31 home win over
Alberta last Saturday. The Dinos gave up a late touchdown to the
Bears in the final minute of the fourth quarter, but Calgary’s
Nathan Coehoorn recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the
win.
Calgary quarterback Erik Glavic, a former Hec Crighton winner
who is in his first season with the Dinos after transferring
from Saint Mary’s, powered the Dinos offence with 332 passing
yards and 67 rushing yards. Running back Matt Walter rushed 25
times for 154 yards and two touchdowns, while Anthony Parker
caught seven passes for 177 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown
pass early in the fourth quarter. Deji Oduwole led the Dinos
with five solo tackles and four assisted tackles, while Matt
Grohn had three pass breakups.
Rams head coach Frank McCrystal expects much of the same from
Glavic and the Dinos on Friday.
“Calgary is a very athletic team - they have good size, great
speed, and a lot of weapons,” McCrystal said. “Glavic reminds me
a lot of (former Calgary and Regina quarterback) Darryl Leason
with his size and his ability to throw the football.”
The Rams are still feeling the effects of their season-opening
win over Manitoba two weekends ago. Left guard Devin Hillier and
cornerback Daniel Knaus are both expected to be out for the
season, while centre Brenden Bennett remains doubtful for
Friday’s contest. David Stefanuk will continue to start in place
of Hillier, while Lukomski slid in nicely for Knaus in the
Saskatchewan game. Expect true freshman Brett Jones to get
another start at centre if Bennett is unable to go for the
second week in a row.
The two teams are dead even in their all-time series. Including
the postseason, Calgary and Regina have played 14 games against
each other, with each team winning twice. The Dinos hold a 6-5
edge in conference games, while the Rams have a 2-1 advantage in
the playoffs.
The last time Calgary and Regina played was on Nov. 2 of last
season, when the Dinos scored a 24-17 win in the Canada West
semifinals in Calgary. The Dinos would go on to win the Canada
West championship the next weekend over Simon Fraser.
Friday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. All the action will be
live at 620 CKRM (www.620ckrm.com),
